The incredibly inventive Nutshell is narrated by a fetus. The Children Act is about a judge trying to decide whether a 17-year-old should be able to refuse life-saving treatment for religious reasons. McEwan’s three latest books present an interesting variety. Atonement is certainly the best, but I’m inclined to think more people will be familiar with that one because of the movie. Before we get much further, I will freely admit I’m not reviewing his best book. They are all well worth the time it takes to read them (which, by the way, is not that much). If I hadn’t decided to do only one book per author, McEwan would have five on this list: Atonement (2001), Saturday (2005), The Children Act (2014), Nutshell (2016), and Machines Like Me (2019). Ian McEwan is my favorite British novelist.
