The novel’s protagonist loves the album, and her listening to it is a motif that recurs throughout the novel. The title is an allusion to a music album entitled Never Let Me Go by a fictional singer, Judy Bridgewater. It’s the only alternative history novel ever shortlisted for the Booker Prize and it won many other literary awards. Never Let Me Go, written by Kazuo Ishiguro and published in 1992, is one of the greatest alternative history novels ever written. ![]()

The Children Act is about a judge trying to decide whether a 17-year-old should be able to refuse life-saving treatment for religious reasons. McEwan’s three latest books present an interesting variety. Atonement is certainly the best, but I’m inclined to think more people will be familiar with that one because of the movie. Before we get much further, I will freely admit I’m not reviewing his best book. They are all well worth the time it takes to read them (which, by the way, is not that much). If I hadn’t decided to do only one book per author, McEwan would have five on this list: Atonement (2001), Saturday (2005), The Children Act (2014), Nutshell (2016), and Machines Like Me (2019). Ian McEwan is my favorite British novelist. ![]() ![]() It is 1961, and the International Aerospace Coalition has established a colony on the moon. ![]() The Fated Sky continued the grand sweep of alternate history begun in The Calculating Stars. ![]() ![]() But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn’t take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can’t go into space, too.Įlma’s drive to become the first Lady Astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.
